Palwasha

Turlock, California

Palwasha’s story echoes the strength of spirit, tenacity, and transformation. Arriving in Turlock, California, in November 2017 from Afghanistan, Palwasha brought with her not only her aspirations but also her unwavering determination. At 17, she embarked on this journey with her husband, determined to forge a better life in a new land.

Palwasha’s life had taken an unforeseen turn due to her husband’s association with the U.S. military in Bagram. Threats from terrorists caused them to flee their homeland, leading them through a circuitous route from Dubai to Germany and finally to the U.S. through Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs).

In 2022, Palwasha’s journey took a transformative turn when she learned about the IRC’s Refugee Family Child Care Microenterprise Development program.

Opening her own business from home would allow her to bring in much-needed income while caring for her own children. However, Palwasha needed to be financially stable enough to open a business. She was unbanked, had no credit, and required more financial literacy to operate a business.

To get started, Palwasha began receiving financial education and coaching through the IRC’s Financial Capabilities Program. Her financial coach assisted her in opening a checking and savings account and helped her obtain a credit-building loan. A few months after she had made payments on her loan, she was approved for a non-secured credit card. Palwasha attended tax, credit building, budgeting, banking, and more workshops.

Armed with these tools, Palwasha took monumental strides towards her financial independence. She applied for and received a business license and has since opened her childcare business, doubling the household income. As of August 2023, Palwasha’s journey is marked by continual progress, empowerment, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow for herself and her family.
